Five Ways To Keep Your Jewellery Looking It's Best!
We're all guilty of throwing our necklaces into our jewellery box after a night out and forgetting about them. Well, at least I know I am. And I'm sure there are countless of you out there who keep your beloved rings on while you wash your hands and apply lotions. Come on, hands up. But all that grime and grease will be starting to make your gemstones look dull and dirty, and i'm sure your silver has seen better days. The good news is that this is all fixable! If you have a major clean up on your hands then be sure to consult a professional jeweller, but in the meantime here are my top five ways to keep your jewellery looking it's best:
1. Keep The Boxes
It can be tempting to throw away all of your jewellery gift boxes when you're in the midst of a de-clutter, but I beg of you to hold on to the good quality ones. If you store your rings loose in a bag you're running the risk of scratching the gemstones and damaging the settings. Earrings should also be treated with care as they have a tendency to be separated from their backs and lose their partners. And don't even get me started on tangled/broken necklace chains!
2. Invest In A Silver Polishing Cloth
You might not spend as much time in tool shops as I do (it's your loss, to be honest), but you might have come across a polishing cloth or two in your time. These special cleaning cloths are a jewellers best friend as they are impregnated with an anti-tarnish solution which buffs away dirt and smooths on a protective coating. You can buy them online and in most jewellery shops, and they are guarenteed to keep your silver looking good as new.
3. Get Back To Basics With A Toothbrush
There are some itches, however, that a polishing cloth can't scratch. Here at HGR Jewellery HQ I have tools, machines and cleaning solutions that get into all the nooks & crannies on my metal, but I can let you into a secret... A toothbrush works pretty good too! Run your jewellery under a warm tap, lather up a SOFT toothbrush with a little washing-up liquid or baking soda, and scrub to your hearts content. Be careful of stone settings, gemstones and surface finishes (e.g. gold plating & oxidisation) and make sure to rinse your jewellery properly afterwards.
4. Store Away From Direct Sunlight
Obviously your favourite garnet ring is going to be spending most of it's time pride of place on your finger, but on the rare occasions that you do take it off make sure to store it away from direct sunlight. This applies to all gemstones and specialist materials. It will take decades for the sunlight to fade a stone or affect it's colour, but in my opinion it's better safe than sorry. This will also encourage you to take on board Tip #1, and will help prevent you accidentally misplacing a priceless family heirloom...
5. Perfume/cologne, then jewellery. Always.
It's tempting to spritz yourself with perfume just as you're running out the door, but this can have a really damaging impact on the life of your jewellery. The alcohol and oils in your perfume will damage delicate natural materials such as pearls, will accelerate the tarnishing of silver, and will make your gold look dull and discoloured. All the fragrance and jewellery experts agree - apply your perfume before you start getting dressed, and make sure your jewellery is the last thing you put on.
